The rules

There are not many, and none of them is a surprise. They are drawn from the terms, which is the document that actually binds your account — this page is the readable version of the same thing.

No tolerance

There is no tolerance for objectionable content or for abusive behaviour on The 406: Montana. Content that breaks the rules below is removed, and accounts that post it, or that harass, threaten or target other people, lose access.

This is not a warning system to be worked through. A serious first offence ends an account on the first offence. Smaller things get a proportionate response — content removed, or posting suspended for a while — but nobody is owed a quota of strikes.

What may not be posted

Sexual content involving minors, in any form, real or generated. This is reported to the authorities, not just removed, and the account is deleted rather than suspended.
Non-consensual intimate imagery, content that sexualises children, and material that identifies or targets somebody for harassment.
Content that incites violence, promotes self-harm, or advertises illegal goods and services.
Work that is not yours, posted without permission. Repeated copyright infringement ends an account — see copyright.
Automated posting, scraping, bulk account creation, or attempts to probe, overload or get around the security of the service.

Who can be here

You must be at least 13 to hold an account, and if you are under 18 you need a parent or guardian's permission. Accounts found to belong to children under 13 are removed.

One person, one account. Do not share credentials, and do not register on somebody else's behalf.

What happens when a rule is broken

Every report is reviewed within 24 hours. Reports are read by a person and acted on within one day of arriving. Where content is unlawful or somebody is at risk it comes down as soon as it is seen, without waiting on the rest of that window.

There are four responses, and they are not interchangeable:

Content removed. The photograph, comment or wall post goes. You are told what and why.
Posting suspended. No new work for a period. Comments, likes and follows keep working.
Account suspended. All writing stops. You can still read, still read the reason, and still appeal.
Account removed. For the things at the top of the list.

Reading is never cut off, including under a lock — which is the point of the appeal existing. Somebody who cannot read the reason cannot answer it.

You will be told, and you can argue. Every decision that affects your account arrives as an alert saying what was done and the reason recorded for it, and every one of them can be appealed once, from the notice itself. A person reads appeals.

Hashtags

A hashtag is a page, and the rules above apply to it as much as to a photograph. Slurs and harassment do not become acceptable for being typed with a # in front of them, and tags used that way are blocked outright.

Ten tags per photograph. A caption reaching for thirty pages at once is the oldest spam shape there is, and the eleventh is simply ignored.
